Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Experience understanding, healing and growth from ACEs

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) refer to significant and traumatic experiences during childhood that have an immense effect on an individual's emotional, mental, and physical well-being.  Commonly referred to as ACEs, this refers to any harmful incidents that occur during childhood or adolescent development. Abuse refers to physical, psychological, or sexual violence. At the same time, neglect is defined as any lack of care and attention from an adult caregiver (for instance, by not attending to basic needs such as feeding).

ACEs fall under three general headings.

Household Dysfunction: Being exposed to various household challenges such as domestic violence, substance abuse, mental illness, or the imprisonment of family members can have lasting impacts. Being exposed to trauma-inducing experiences such as domestic violence or substance abuse is likely to create endless challenges and difficulties that lead to various negative results in an individual's life - including:

Mental Health Issues: ACEs are associated with an increased risk for mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Physical Health Issues: ACEs very often leads to physical health concerns, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes.

Behavior Issues: People who have endured ACEs often struggle with impulse control issues, addiction, and risky behavior, lacking impulsive control - like driving unsafely or too fast.

Interpersonal Issues: Adverse Childhood Experiences can wreak havoc with their ability to form and sustain healthy relationships, making the task of forging and keeping them incredibly difficult.
